I. KINGDOMS & VICEROYS:  Music of Spain and its Dominions
with special guests Marta Almajano, soprano and Richard Savino, Spanish guitar
soprano, two violins, cello, baroque guitar, harpsichord & percussion (7 performers)
Works by: Durón, Falconieri, Castellanos, de Salazar, Vivaldi, Quiroz, Literes

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries Spain ruled over a vast region that stretched from Italy, across the Mediterranean and Atlantic to Central and South America, and beyond. In these territories cathedrals and courtly life demanded a varied and active musical scene, and in the case of the Americas, the indigenous populations were often drawn into the arts and participated in their production. The musical result was a style that even in sacred compositions bears the imprint of folk music.
Featuring the extraordinary soprano Marta Almajano, one of the world's foremost exponents of 17th- & 18th-century Spanish vocal music, in a rare North American appearance.
Offered: November 2009; March 2010
